biography - english/ francais
When I found out (through setting up a google alert for 'Laura B') that my music had been downloaded 80,000 times in 2 months on just one US site I wasn't sure how I felt about it. I certainly haven't missed 80.000 sales because people don't buy what they don't know, and how many of these 80.000 people know about Laura B. On the other hand, at some point, these 80,000 people will come round to listening to my music and I rather like that idea!
This is the reality of being an independent artist in London 2010 and I'm embracing the future with the same enthusiasm that made me leave Paris on a whim one morning to come and learn about engineering in London. The first job I landed was at Mayfair Studios where, within a few months I worked with Pink Floyd who gave me my first real introduction into the world of pure sound :) followed by unforgettable orchestral sessions at Abbey Road, Eric Clapton dropping by for overdubs, Michael Kamen writing the new score for Brazil on the piano while I sat underneath it surrounded by soundwaves... I was blessed with a mad enthusiasm for music and sound that took me on a roller coaster ride from Pink Floyd to pop to industrial to dub to techno, house and ambient... to Laura B!
In 1998 I bought an Akai sampler and an Atari computer and started writing music. In 1999 I released my first track (the instrumental of Midi a Minuit) on 'Female of the Species'. That year I was spotted by Pete Lawrence and I spent the next 10 years being a main artist at the Big Chill Festival, also mastering and producing for their label. My record deal with them didn't bear fruit so I went independent (Hurray! Freedom at last and control over my career!) and released the orange ep after calling Chris Coco to ask him what I should call my label. 'Fantastic Recordings of course!' he said :) Quick check online, it's available, buy the domain and here we are! Laura B, 'the fantastic Laura B to her friends' (merci The Guardian!) releases her music on her own label!
And today I have a new website, a blog, a Twitter and even a Facebook page! And I am looking straight at you :)
